MANILA, Philippines -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will reactivate the voters’ registration of teachers who, because of their assignments during the last two elections, were unable to vote.
“We would like to inform all our teachers who served in the last two electoral exercises whose registrations have been deactivated that their registrations shall be reactivated,” Comelec chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. said Wednesday in a statement.
The statement was issued following a meeting between Abalos and a group calling itself “Teachers’ Dignity Coalition” Wednesday morning.
Benjo Basas, teacher of Baesa High School in Caloocan City and chairman of the group, said some teachers may not be allowed to serve as members of the Board of Election Inspectors because they failed to vote in recent elections,
He also voiced fears of a “massive disenfranchisement” of teachers who will not be allowed to vote.
Abalos urged the Department of Education to direct teachers to apply “in batches” for the transfer of their registration to the areas where they will serve during the elections.
The Comelec, in a resolution passed March 5, has allowed teachers to transfer their registration to the places they are assigned to.
Abalo said the teachers can start registering immediately.
